Hello reader and welcome!
Once upon a time I blogged and recently decided to try my hand at it again.
What will I be blogging?
I hope to share my love of cinema here.
Each winter/spring I eagerly await the annual Academy Awatd telecast, this past March was no different. Jimmy Kimmel’s return to the hosting post excited me and he did not disappoint. He is a sandy comedian who carried an entertaining telecast.
The big winner of the night was Everything Everywhere All At Once. Crowning this film with the best picture award disappointed me. While I enjoyed the film I did not love it, and it did not meet my two criteria for the award. For me a best picture champion has to, first, be a great movie. Second it has to speak to something in current society, either socially or something within film itself. Tar, Women Talking, and The Fablemens all met that criteria. So did the snubbed featured Till, The Woman King, and Empire of Light.
Among the seven vobtories Everything Everywhere All at Once took was supporting actress for Jamie Lee Curtis. I have been a huge fan of hers for years. Despite not being the best of the nominated performances I was excited she won.
Favorite films of mine won further down the line. I was pleased that Women Talking took home adapted screenplay. The power of the movie was in its writing. Top Gun: Maverick was awarded the sound trophy and I would of loved Lady Gaga to win the song award for the Tom Cruise sequel. This film was a high octane blockbuster that I fell in love with after I viewed it.
Personally I would of loved to see Marvell the Shell with Shoes Om win the animated feature but am ok with Pinocchio winning. It was a well made and entertaining feature.
While I take issue with the title of The Whale Brendan Fraser gave a great performance and won over an incredible field of best actor nominees.
As always some great films and performances were snubbed. Babylon and it’s cast we’re all deserving of nominations as well as Empire of Light.
The telecast itself was entertaining despite being disrupted with mostly uninspired performances of the original song nominees and a presentation of the trailer for The Little Mermaid.
Until next years Oscars I look forward to following the buzz.
