The furthest thing from a secret is my passion for cinema. It is a passion I whole heartedly embrace and love sharing with those around me. Spoiler alert that is a major reason I author this blog!
Included in that oassion is film history and all kinds of movies, ranging from scary to documentaries and everything in between. My favorites tend to be strong stories with interesting characters. Spinning Gold and How to Blow Up A Pipeline have been released this year that have stood under that umbrella.
However a good movie can be just fun. After all a copy of Cocaine Bear sits on the shelves my movie library. This past Memorial Day weekend there was not one but two movies released that were just fun to watch. Coincidentally both comedies.
First up is You Hurt My Feelings starring Julie Lious-Dreyfus. The movie focuses on a writer who finds out her husband has been lying to her about enjoying the nook she is currently writing.
The movie premise is simple which meant the writers could focus more on telling the story well. In doing that the movie features many clever one liners mixed with some borderline bizarre scenes. This mixture worked well in creating a fun and unique comedy.
What also works well for the movie is how relatable it is. The origins of the film is based in rejection. That is one of life’s first and most consistent lessons. The movie does it with a sense of humor.
The other comedy released this weekend was About My Father starring Sebastian Maniscalco and Robert Deniro. The movie follows Sebastian Maniscalco when he and his Dad (Deniro) meet the parents of Maniscalco’s girlfriend. The premise was similar to the Deniro comedy Meet the Parents. About My Father is a slapstick comedy at heart.
I do enjoy a slapstick comedy. I am highly entertained with having to pay minimal attention to the story. That is what appealed to me about this one when I saw the trailers. After seeing the film I was pleased that the appeal of the trailers delivered.
You Hurt My Feelings was a nit more grown up than About My Father. Both movies were a blast to watch especially with a crowd.
I will see you at the movies!
