What makes a movie worthy to be named nest picture, at the Oscars? For me there are two requirements:
1 The movie must be an excellent movie.
2 The movie needs to speak to some part of the times when it was released.
Some films hit both markers. The Hurt Locker and In the Heat of the Night are both prime examples. Films like Unforgiven and The Shape of Water are both great but fall short of the second marker. Some movies like The Artist fall short of both markers.
It is curremtly early in June. The summer blockbuster season is on full swing. Typically the big awards films aren’t released until the cool days of fall. Some strong films and potential contenders have already lit the silver screen.
This got me thinking what are the best and worse films to be awarded nest picture.
Without further delay here is what I deem the best ten.
1 Casablanca
2 In the Heat of the Night
3 The Godfather part II
4 Moonlight
5 Midnight Cowboy
6 Parasite
7 The Bridge on the River Kwai
8 The Godfather
9 One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
10 Nomadland
The five worst
1 The Artist
2 The Sound of Music
3 Kramer v Kramer
4 My Fair Lady
5 Ordinary People
In March the 96th film will take up the mantle of Oscar winning best picture. Where will it be placed on the list of bendy picture winners?
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
