DIRTY DANCING (1987) ~ A LOOK BACK

Have recent events made a movie relevant all over again?  If you prefer that can be phrased as kept relevant.  Over the weekend the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe V Wade had its one year anniversary. Over this controversial weekend the 1987 classic Dirty Dancing played on the big screen.

Yes the soundtrack is great and the dancing is a blast to watch. More importantly the heart of the movie is about a strong willed woman.  One of the films subplots focuses on helping to arrange an abortion.

The subplot goes into both the medical consequences and social stigma around the procedure. While the movies is over thirty five years old the points made in this plot line are still relevant today.  If that stigma was not still around, in certain circles, the case would of never been brought back to the nation’s high court.  This decision can put women in situations with subpar care.  Not to get to political, but I think that ship sailed from the start of this blog, health care is a right not a privilege.

The Jennifer Grey character is an important cinematic figure, even more so today.  She stands up for what is right, no matter what.  That is a lesson that is valuable to girls and boys of all ages.

Based on all that I a, thrilled many of the upcoming generation where in attendance at Sundays screening.  I am sure a point or two went over sone heads but the lessons there are important
