Perfect Blue is twenty five years old now. I came to this conclusion when I attended a twenty five year anniversary screening.
Reflecting back on the movie it tackles an a wide range of issues in its eighty one minute runtime. These issues include obsession -in particular with pop culture, mental illness, self image among others. The feature covers the issues in depth and very well. Black Swan, which owes a lot both thematically and plot to this movie, coveted those issues well.
I wish more attended the Perfect Blue screening to encourage more movies like this to be played in theaters. Yes I said the same thing about the tenth anniversary screening of Sharknado. It’s true though movies can be more than superhero movies and Barbie. They can deliver a powerful message to a large group of people. Movies are a great art form that bring all types of people together. Perfect Blue us a powerful and beautiful movie with themes worth discussing.
Like others in the anime genre thr animation looks great, esp in a theatrical setting. That is to be expected though.
Over the past eighteen months I have enjoyed seeing anime films on the big screen. My Neighbor Totoro, Ponyo, Howl’s Mivibg Castle, Kiki’s Delivery Service, The Wind Rises to name a few. The genre is not my favorite but that does not stop me from throughly enjoying them.
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
