The Mysterious Case of Hercule Poirot

Storyline: In post-World War II Venice, Poirot, now retired and living in his own exile, reluctantly attends a seance. But when one of the guests is murdered, it is up to the former detective to once again uncover the killer.

Following Murder on the Orient Express and Death on the Nile, Kenneth Branagh returns as Hercule Poirot in A Haunting in Venice.  Like it’s two predecessors this film assembles a great ensemble for a murder mystery.  This one had a nice supernatural twist which resulted in some jump scares being inserted into the film.  The jump scares became a nice spice to an intense mystery.

I haven enjoyed the Kenneth Branagh adaptations of the Agatha Christie adaptations since his first adaptation, Murder on  the Orient Exoress remake.  I felt that Death on the Nile was a step down but still highly entertaining.   A Haunting in Venice bounces back to the standard set in the first of the now trilogy.

I was pleasantly surprised by Tina Fey’s performance. I typically think of her in silly roles like Baby Mama and Mean Girls.  I throughly enjoyed Whiskey Tango Fictrot and thought her performance in this detective film was as equally impressive. Don’t misunderstand I think she is a comedic stronghold. Her Sarah Palin skits on SNL still keep me laughing.

I hope this franchise continues beyond this trilogy because I have enjoyed these three entrees.

Until next time I will see you at the movies!
