FREMONT (2923) A must see Small Film

STORYLINE:  Beautiful and troubled 20-something Donya, an Afghan translator who used to work with the U.S. government, has trouble sleeping. She lives by herself in Fremont, California, in a building with other Afghan immigrants and often dines alone at a local restaurant watching soap operas. Her routine changes when she’s promoted to writing the fortunes at her job at a fortune cookie factory in the city. As her fortunes are read by strangers throughout the Bay, Donya’s smoldering longing drives her to send a message out to the world, unsure where it will lead.

Sometimes I walk into a movie not knowing what to expect.  Last night, when I sat down to see the Indy film Fremont, I was unsure what to expect.  With the sunject matter and storyline I thought the film could of gone in different directions.

The way it went was a pleasant surprise.  The movie was not hokey with its romantic storyline or preachy with its political points.   Both lines are delicate balancing acts that the movie walked well.  Every point was made subtly and I think that makes the points stronger.

Fremont is also a well acted film with folks I have not seen before.

The other thing about the behind the scenes I enjoyed was how little of a score there was.  I have said it before I hate when music tells me how to feel in a certain scene.  I find it annoying when the score blasts over the talent.  If a movie is well written and the performers are talented actors let them perform the written words.  They well convey the emotional moment better than the music.

While I have blogged about big blockbusters and classic films I do like bringing attention to smaller films as well.  I hope Fremont is a smaller that you will

 Purchase a ticket to see.

Until next time I will see you at the movies!
