PRISCILLA (2023)

STORYLINE: When teenage Priscilla Beaulieu meets Elvis Presley at a party, the man who is already a meteoric rock-and-roll superstar becomes someone entirely unexpected in private moments: a thrilling crush, an ally in loneliness, a vulnerable best friend. Through Priscilla’s eyes, Sofia Coppola tells the unseen side of a great American myth in Elvis and Priscilla’s long courtship and turbulent marriage, from a German army base to his dream-world estate at Graceland, in this deeply felt and ravishingly detailed portrait of love, fantasy, and fame.

I do particularly enjoy the music of Elvis Presley.  Sofia Coppola has made a few films I hace enjoyed as well but overall I so not get excited for her work.  Lost In Translatioj and Marie Antoinette I thought were great and I enjoyed On the Rocks, other films of hers I have not really cared for upon viewing.

So why did O get excited to see Priscilla? Mainly I was interested in the films subject matter.  I only know Priscilla Presley where she stands in the canon of pion culture, the wife of Elvis, her role of the immortal tv show Dallas, and I saw the hilarious The Naked Gun trilogy.

When making biopics of celebrities there tends to be a formula that keeps them in a god like status in which they have been elevated towards.  What Priscilla does as a film is presents its subject as a human being.  As a viewer this created a more compelling movie.  More importantly I found myself more invested in the central character. Combine this with a great performance from the lead actress, which the film heavily depends on, and the movie comes together nicely.

While Elvis’ music is referenced throughout the film I do not recall a single song of his used in the movie.  As a non fan of his music I appreciated that.

Overall a pleasant surprise at what a great movie this one turned out to be.

Until next time I will see you at the movies!
