RUSTIN (2023)

STORYLINE: Activist Bayard Rustin faces racism and homophobia as he helps change the course of Civil Rights history by orchestrating the 1963 March on Washington.

The biopic genre has a history of being cookie cutter and formulaic. That statement is not limited to the biopic genre, that will explain but I am wondering off point.

Rustin is a typical biopic but tells a narrow focus of its subjects life.  The movie tells the behind the scenes of the peaceful March on Washington that MLK led.

It was fascinating to see how quickly this demonstration came together.  It took eight weeks to plan an event I assumed took months longer to strategize.

The brilliance of the film was incorporating historical figures such as MLK as supporting characters. Typically these characters they would dominate the story to boost ticket sales and they are featured in the movie as appropriate in the true story.  The story was kept on Rustin who put the match together.

It is an important story and well told.  Do see it.  Yes it is, sigh, Netflix so it can be streamed.  But if you can see it in the theater do so.  I continue to be an advocate for the movie going experience over streaming.

Until next time I will see you at the movies!
