POOR THINGS (2023)

STORYLINE: From filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos and producer Emma Stone comes the incredible tale and fantastical evolution of Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.

There are movies that I enjoy because they have a strangeness to them.  Other movies I enjoy because they have an unusual since of humor about them.  In the middle of that intersection is the 2023 release Poor Things.  A film I throughly enjoyed for those two just mentioned reasons.

I was drawn into the films Frankenstein tale from the trailers by the ensemble, blue and dark humor hoping it would hold up through the two hour twenty one minute runtime.  While I felt the lag here and there the movie did rebound.  The humor held the majority of the movie and I laughed though out, some I admit in awkwardness.

The film centered atround Emma Stone’s performance.  I loved watching her characters evolution through life the mist in this film. As I author this blog I am not sure why that is nut in the days to come that may change.

Watching Willem Dafeo’s performance fascinated me as well but I have always been fascinated by him as actor.  I can watch Shadow of the Vampire, The Florida Project really anything with him and just be mesmerized by the performance.

Come Oscar nomination morning let’s see where this one stands. I still have my favorites to win but I will nestle this one to compete with them.

Until next time I will see you at the movies!
