STORYLINE: It is Cord Jefferson’s hilarious directorial debut, which confronts our culture’s obsession with reducing people to outrageous stereotypes. Jeffrey Wright stars as Monk, a frustrated novelist who’s fed up with the establishment profiting from “Black” entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes. To prove his point, Monk uses a pen name to write an outlandish “Black” book of his own, a book that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain.

I am a huge fan of movies that challenge me and with its themes of stereotypes racism from an educated African-Americans point of view, I was a bit uncomfortable, but I feel that was the point. That is ok.
Jeffrey Wright gave an incredible formance as the lead in the film. I have been a huge fan of his for a while now, and look forward to following the trajectory as he navigates the award season!
The film did surprise me with some of the family storylines. I was expecting more of the novel to take front and center of the plot. But was pleasantly surprised. It all goes back to how well-balanced of a movie that is American fiction.
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
