I do enjoy watching a comedy. I prefer slapstick comedies such as Airplane! over romantic comedies.
There are, of course, movies of the romantic comedy genre that melted my heart. I a, Sleepless in Seattle as Harry and Sally Meet. Of course You’ve Got Mail is my favorite of the genre.
Recently I attended a screening of Anyone But You. The film takes Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing and adapts the play as a modern day romantic comedy. I felt the movie fell flat, despite enjoying the performances the two leads gave. Glenn Powell (Hidden Figures, Top Gun: Maverick) is destined to be a star but that is for another time. The idea of adapting Shakespeare as a modern day romantic comedy worked leagues better in the Heath Ledger film 10 Things I Hate About You. Than again the film had the advantage of starring Heath Ledger.
The genre had its peak in the 90s and Anyone But You was a valiant effort just not for me.
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
