TITANIC (1997): A Retro Review

STORYLINE: 84 years later, a 100 year-old woman named Rose DeWitt Bukater tells the story to her granddaughter Lizzy Calvert, Brock Lovett, Lewis Bodine, Bobby Buell and Anatoly Mikailavich on the Keldysh about her life set in April 10th 1912, on a ship called Titanic when young Rose boards the departing ship with the upper-class passengers and her mother, Ruth DeWitt Bukater, and her fiancé, Caledon Hockley. Meanwhile, a drifter and artist named Jack Dawson and his best friend Fabrizio De Rossi win third-class tickets to the ship in a game. And she explains the whole story from departure until the death of Titanic on its first and last voyage April 15th, 1912 at 2:20 in the morning.

It is Oscar season!  This weekend, appropriately, Titanic, one of the three films to win a record breaking eleven Oscars lit up the silver screen once again.

The 1997 best picture winner still plays beautifully on the big screen after all these years.  Yes I am bias because I am an advocate for the theater going experience over streaming services. Then again, the popularity of this film drew a crowd of over sixty folks out to a 12:15 showing on a Sunday. There is something to be said for that fact.

Sleepless in Seattle, The Princess Bride, When Harry Met Sally, and Beginners all to name to name a few.

Looking back at Titanic’s  historic Oscar wins, many were well deserved. It is a well made movie, one that I do enjoy. However in the best picture category do I enjoy it more than its competitors L. A. Confidential or Good Will Hunting? Not in the slightest. The ladder two, which both won Oscars for acting and writing, I personally thought were more deserving of the best picture trophy. In the end the Oscars are a subjective competition, and I have only one hand to raise.

Still, it was good to see Titanic sail its way back on to the big screen. It was even better because there was a big crowd that got into the movie.

Until next time I will see you at the movies!
