STORYLINE: Elly Conway, an introverted spy novelist who seldom leaves her home, is drawn into the real world of espionage when the plots of her books get a little too close to the activities of a sinister underground syndicate. When Aiden, a spy, shows up to save her (he says) from being kidnapped or killed (or both), Elly and her beloved cat Alfie are plunged into a covert world where nothing, and no one, is what it seems.
The espionage genre is my favorite genre of film. James Bond, Brdige of Spies, Zero Dark Thirty, Three Days of the Confor are just a few within the genre that I enjoy. Director Matthew Vaughn, who directed the Kingsman films (of which I am a fan), released his latest spy thriller mixed with over the top action thriller Argylle this weekend.
There were over the top action sequences that I enjoyed in Argylle, much like I did in the Kingsman franchise. Same can be said for the films ensemble. I especially enjoyed how over the top Sam Rockwell’s performance was.
Unlike the films in the Kingsman franchise I felt that Argylle was lacking. First there were to many twists and turns. This made the story feel bloated at times when the film could of benefited from being twenty minutes shorter. Second the villain was underwhelming. That was disappointing especially since Bryan Cranston is a very talented actor. It seemed that the character was not well developed by the writers not the actor.
I still had fun watching the movie. There were many wonderful hokey moments sprinkled in throughout to compensate for my complaints about the movie.
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
