The Monk & the Gun

STORYLINE: The Monk And The Gun captures the wonder and disruption as Bhutan becomes one of the world’s youngest democracies. Known throughout the world for its extraordinary beauty and its emphasis on Gross National Happiness, the remote Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan was the last nation to connect to the internet and television. And if that weren’t enough change, the King announced shortly afterwards that he would cede his power to the people via their vote and a new form of government: Democracy.

I am going to be honest, when I took my seat to see The Monk and the Gun I knew nothing about the premise of the movie.  I was seeing the movie solely because I loved the title.  I will admit I have seen lesser quality movies for lesser quality reasons.

Not knowing the premise of The Monk and the Gun did not set an expectation of what kind of movie I was going to watch.  I am more than thrilled with the caliber of movie I saw.  The premise was thought provoking mixed with storylines that left me wondering what direction the story was heading.  That is a very rare combination.

In some ways The Monk and the Gun reminded me of Viceroy’s House (2017).  For those unfamiliar with Viceroy’s House it focuses on India’s transition to independent rule from Britain, but that is for another blog.

Visually The Monk and the Gun is beautiful film to watch.  The many mountainous scenes alone are a visual feast.

Yes I am glad I saw this powerful movie.

Until next time I will see you at the movies!
