Over the course of one overly warm weekend in July two soon to be mega hits lit up the big screen. One was the thought provoking Oppenheimer and the other was the girl power Barbie. One was an excellent epic and the other was, well, Barbie. Regardless both were wildly popular movies. Jump ahead six, seven months and it is awards season and both films are competing for multiple Academy Awards including best picture.
For many years the Oscars have been struggling with their ratings. One needs to discount the 93rd ceremony when Covid effected every corer of society.
During the years many different approaches have been taken to skyrocket ratings, from bringing in popular stars to host, having categories air before the show instead of during, and
attempting to introduce new categories like best popular film. All of which have failed to help bump the Oscar ratings.
With the popularity of both Oppenheimer and Barbie the Oscars were smart in nominating both movies, even if Oppenheimer is the one that truly deserves it.
Setting aside my love of Oppenheimer and dislike of Barbie Oscar night is the single night of the year I look forward to the most, more then Christmas. What I want is an entertaining telecast with interesting speeches. I like Jimmy Kimmel as host and am glad he is returning. I look forward to The 96th Annual Academy Awards!
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
