BOBI WINE: THE PEOPLE’S PRESIDENT (2023 Documentary)

STORYLINE: Follows Ugandan opposition leader, activist and musical star Bobi Wine. He used his music to fight the regime led by Yoweri Museveni, the person who led the country for 35 years

What do movies RBG, I am Not Your Negro, The Cove, and Bowling for Colubine have in common?  They are all feature length documentaries that competed for the Academy Award and in one way or another feature a political aspect into their narrative.  Adding to that list is Bobi Wine: The People’s President.

I went to see the film ahead of the upcoming Oscar telecast not seen any of the documentary features and I like to see at least the front runners in the category headed into the ceremony. After watching this film I understand why this is one of the two fil,s considered the front runners. The topic is worldly and sadly appears seems to becoming more relevant across the world as I watch the headlines.

In that regard the documentary was upsetting. However this seems to be the nature of political documentaries.

While Bobi Wine came to fame as an entertainer I like how the film focused more on his activism and politics. It mentioned his music because it is worth noting and quickly moved on. Had the music been more of a focus of the movie it would of taken the attention away from the point and change the narrative of the film. That would of made it a less interesting and effective movie.

Until next time I will see you at the movies!
