STORYLINE: A young man, Aren, is recruited into a secret society of magical Black people who dedicate their lives to a cause of utmost importance: making white people’s lives easier. (IMDb)
Let me start by saying I am uncomfortable with the title of this film. That discomfort is a major point the film makes within its story. The other major point is acceptance and lead Justice Smith gives a big speech towards the end of the movie on the subject. This brings to mind to America Ferreira’s Barbie speech from this past summer.
The American Society Of the Magical Negro combines the right amount of bizarre in its story with uncomfortable in its points to make it a noteworthy film in my book. In fact because of that unique combination it is a film I really enjoyed.
I am eager to see what is in store for star Justice Smith. I thought he gave a great performance in the lead role. I remember enjoying his character in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and wanted to see more of him as an actor. Now that I got my chance I hope he become a mega star.
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
