ONE LIFE (2024, Drama)

STORYLINE – The true story of Sir Nicholas ‘Nicky’ Winton, a young London broker who, in the months leading up to World War II, rescued 669 predominantly Jewish children from the Nazis. Nicky visited Prague in December 1938 and found families who had fled the rise of the Nazis in Germany and Austria, living in desperate conditions with little or no shelter and food, and under threat of Nazi invasion. He immediately realized it was a race against time. How many children could he and the team rescue before the borders closed? Fifty years later, it’s 1988 and Nicky lives haunted by the fate of the children he wasn’t able to bring to safety in England; always blaming himself for not doing more. It’s not until a live BBC television show, ‘That’s Life’, surprises him by introducing him to some surviving children – now adults – that he finally begins to come to terms with the guilt and grief he had carried for five decades.(IMDb)

What do The Silence of the Lambs, The Father, The Two Popes, and Legends of the Fall all have in common?  They all feature incredible performances by Anthony Hopkins, as do many other films,  adding to that list is the 2024 list is the powerful drama One Life.

The power of the movie is in its dual stories and how it tells them. First showing the events as they unfolded and following this years later with how they effected the unlikely hero who stood up to do the right thing. This, of course, anchored by am incredible performance by Anthony Hopkins.  Of course he is Anthony Hopkins so I would be disappointed is the performance would be anything less.  He also is supported by a very talented cast that includes the versatile Helena Bonham Carter and Oscar nominated Jonathan Pryce.

One Life is a true story that tugs at the viewers heart strings but mixes in stand up and cheer moments as well.  It does a great job of conveying the horrors of the Second World War without showing the battlefield violence or harm of any kind. That is the part of the power of this film.

Until next time I will see you at the movies!
