STORYLINE: A young American woman is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the church, but encounters a darkness that causes her to question her faith and uncovers a terrifying conspiracy that hopes to bring about the birth of evil incarnate. (IMDb)
Prequels, no matter the genre, are a tricky piece of cinema to create. Like a puzzle piece they have to fit just right with material already created.
The First Omen fits snuggly into both The Omen franchise as well as the horror genre.
The scares work as jump scares even though they are few and far between. The story wit self was enhoyable, if not a bit on the predicable side. Again that’s the tough part of creating a prequel. You have an endgame that fans already know.
The First Omen pulls it off though. Despite a few hiccups along the way The First Omen has a climax that is frightening. That makes up for the scares being used sparingly leadong up to it. There is an arguement that makes the climax all that more effective.
I really enjoyed seeing Bill Night (Love Actually) as the villain of the film. His performance his menacing.
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
