I am going to start by saying I found the trailer I Saw the TV Glow to be misleading. The film looked to be a through back to the 70/80’s horror films that tend to be some of my favororits in the genre. Yes this film has some of those moments. Yes this film has a David Lynch like atmosphere to it. No I did not find it to be a horror film. That is ok though. I still found it to be a very powerful and bizarre movie. I can see the difficulty in advertising this feature.
The premise sets itself up to be told in many different ways. As previously mentioned it takes a David Lynch/David Cronenberg mix with its storytelling to create an compelling movie for the viewer. The films power is on its allegory. It is two people who are figuring out who they are on the world, obe in the closet, the other transgender. They are not sure how to tell themselves and those around them. Though the course of the film they discover themselves.
I was never expecting this when the the trailer reel gave way to the opening credits. Again I was expecting a through back to classic horror films that I fondly love. This was more moving and easily one of the better films of 2024, which has seem some strong films.
The break out star of the film is Justice Smith (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, The American Society of the Magical Negro). He proved to be an incredible young avtor. This is the kind of performance that deserves awards recognition.
Please note, while I am obviously fond of this feature it may not be for everyone. It breaks my heart putting that disclaimer in here be a use I found iy to be, truly, an incredible film. I hope folks will see it, and see it with an open mind, even if this Lomb go movie is nor their kind of movie. Do watch the trailer first on YouTube.
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
