STORYLINE: The daughter of a German butcher from Manhattan, Ederle was a competitive swimmer who won gold in the 1924 Olympics when she decided to attempt crossing the channel. She undertook the feat after first swimming 22 miles from Battery Park in New York to Sandy Hook, NJ, setting a record that stood for 81 years. She contracted with two newspapers and sold her story, thereby financing her quest. There was actually a race among women who would be first to cross as only five men had done so before.

When I think of films produced by  Disney studios I think of family films ranging from The Parent Trap to Frozen.  When I think of Jerry Bruckheimer produced movies O think of high octane action films such as Top Gun and The Rock.  I keep forgetting that those vin diagrams have over lapped on films such as Pirates of the Caribbean and Remember the Titans. The latest collaboration between the house of mouse and the mega producer is the true story of Trudy Ederle, the first woman to swim the English Channel.

Daisy Ridley, returns to the Disney fold after her stint in a Galaxy far, far away to star in this inspirational film. The 1920’s set film shows very well the uphill struggles Trudy faces. Not because she didn’t gave the talent as a swimmer but because of her gender. Regardless this factor did not get in her way in this stand up and cheer feature, a staple in the Disney archive.

What makes the movie work are the characters.  Trudy is an incredible character to watch as she achieves her goals. She is surrounded by great supporting characters starting with her sister, who is a staple of her time that comes into her own by the end of the film.

The girls mother is a head strong matriarch who pulls the strings.  Trudy’s father, is stubborn but his character development is typical for a Disney film.

The story of Ypung Woman and the Sea in very similar to NYAD.  I enjoyed Young Woman and the Sea over NYAD because I did not have the complaints with this one that I had with NYAD. Yes to Toung Woman and the Sea.

Until next time I will sea you at the movies!
