THE WATCHERS (2024, Horror)

STORYLINE:

This forest isn’t charted on any map. Every car breaks down at its treeline. Mina’s is no different. Left stranded, she is forced into the dark woodland only to find a woman shouting, urging Mina to run to a concrete bunker. As the door slams behind her, the building is besieged by screams. Mina finds herself in a room with a wall of glass, and an electric light that activates at nightfall, when the Watchers come above ground. These creatures emerge to observe their captive humans and terrible things happen to anyone who doesn’t reach the bunker in time.

2024 is becoming a good year for theatrically released hotter films. The majority have been a bloody good time.  Some, such as Immaculate and The First Omen, have been exceptionally excellent films. Adding to the latter part of the 2024 lost is Ishana Night Shynamalan’s directorial debut The Watchers.

In her first fesyutrm starring Dakota Fanning, Ishana crafted an atmospheric horror film, which I prefer as viewer over the shock value of blood and guts scares. The atmospheric suspense created in aThe Watchers led to an intense horror film that keeps the viewer on the edge of the seat.

Director Ishana Night Shynamalan is the daughter if daughter of horror director M. Night Shynamalan.  In The Watchers I could see the influence his films had on his daigters work, esp with films such as Signs and The Village. That seems like a natural course of things.  I do look forward to seeing what Ishana’s films will look like without that influence. Still The Watchers was a great addition to 2024’s theatrical horror releases.

Until next time I will see you at the movies!
