TREASURE (2024)

STORYLINE: 1990 – Ruth, a neurotic businesswoman from New York, takes her father Edek, a charmingly stubborn Holocaust survivor on a journey to Poland to make sense of her family’s past. Edek’s hesitation to confront his past and his often odd demeanor cause more than just one dispute between him and his daughter. The trip unfolds into a story that encapsulates the emotion of discovery and drama with humor. Based on the best-selling autobiographical novel TOO MANY MEN by New York-based writer Lily Brett.

There are a series of films about the second world war that are based on true events that do not necessarily tackle combat. Woman in Gold, One Life, The Monuments Men, and The King’s Speech are to name a few of these movies. Treasure, starring Lena Dunham, us the latest film to be added to that list. It holds the distinction of being the only one to be disappointing on that list as well.

In typical fashion, the film follows a child wanting to get to know their heritage and travels to Europe. The war surviving parent returns to the horrors of the holocaust. What makes the premise stand out are the scenes where the duo return to the apartment where the father lived as a child and he sees his families possessions still in use.

Personally I did not care for the two central

characters of the film. I found Lena Dunham’s Ruth unrelateable and Stephen Fry’s Edek to be an annoying character.  When I do not care for the characters U can not get into the movie.

Oh well, you can’t win them all.  Just ask La La Land at the Oscars.

Until next time I will see you at the movies!
