STORYLINE: Teenager Riley’s mind headquarters is undergoing a sudden demolition to make room for something entirely unexpected: new Emotions. Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust, who’ve long been running a successful operation by all accounts, aren’t sure how to feel when Anxiety shows up. And it looks like she’s not alone.  (IMDb)

   Sequels can be a tricky piece of cinema to map out.  They should simultaneously go in a new direction and the same direction as the o film it is following.  The fantastic sequels add new material withoyr requiring the viewer to have seen the first film.  Sequels such as Aliens, Toy Story 3:  and The Empire Strikes Back do this well.  Films such as Staying Alive and Iron Man 3 fall short of this mark.  Most sequels  such as Inside Out 2 land in the middle.

     Inside Out 2, much like it’s predessor, in crafting the emotions.  In this case both in the characters, new and returning, and story arc.  

   Where the film fails, is crafting a  unique story arc. The films follows the same trajectory as its predecessor.  This is where I got disappointed in the movie.  Pixar has created a wide range of entertaining feature films, including in its drquels.  With Inside Out 2’s story arc I felt they were repeating what they had already done with the first Inside Out.

    Refardless it is a film I enjoyed and a fine film.  It will still compete for the animated feature Oscar this winter.  It holds, as a film, on its own merits. Plus Pixar typically gets nominated in this category year after year.
