KINDS OF KINDNESS (2024)

STORYLINE: A triptych fable, following a man without choice who tries to take control of his own life; a policeman who is alarmed that his wife who was missing-at-sea has returned and seems a different person; and a woman determined to find a specific someone with a special ability, who is destined to become a prodigious spiritual leader.

When going to see a film by Yorgos Lanthimos I do not expect to see something conventional. Afterall this is the director behind such films as Dogroorh, The Lobster, The Favourite, and Poor Things.  I enjoy non conventional films, they tend to break up the release schedule and keep it from becoming repetitive.   This is especially true during the summer season when it tends to be a time of big blockbuster sequels. Director Yorgos Lanthimos latest film Kinds of Kindess is in his tradition of unusual films and truly breaks up the summer sequel blockbuster schedule.

Kinds of Kindness is broken into three different stories. Each told from start to finish before the next is presented. The same actors play different characters in each story, much like Cloud Atlas. The difference is Cloud Atlas interwove its narratives.  The narratives in Kinds of Kindess are more complicated in context and benefit from not being interwoven. Each story does have its own unique voice and visual style.

As much as I enjoyed the movie I nuts I need to see the movie again. There is a lot to absorb. I am certain there are things I missed in all three of the stories.

The cast went seamlessly between their roles in all three storylines. I have lobed all three films now that Emma Stone and Director Yorgos Lanthimos have done together. Kinds of Kibdness follows The Favourite and Poor Thihgs. By far this is the most unique.

In time I will be seeing Konds of Kibdness again and will be understanding it more.

Until next time I will see you at the movies!
