STORYLINE: The story behind the Veuve Clicquot champagne family and business that began in the late 18th century. (IMDb)
It’s not a secret I am not much of a drinker. On occasion I will enjoy a social cocktail. I do have a limited knowledge of wines accumulated from a background where I once served wine. Why bring that up in a blog where the focus is cinema? First that knowledge was gained from working at a local movie theater. Second I recently visited that theater to see a biopic about the champagne entrepreneur Barbe-Nicole Ponsardin Clicquot.
On the surface Widow Clicquot is your stereotypical costume drama. It has the fancy costumes, the beautiful set pieces, and all the drama one cones to expect in such films.
To get it out of the way first yes the films goes into the creative process behind the Champagne. Not to with this subject matter would be considered unspeakable. The film also goes into the hardships of being an independent women in the eatly eighteen hundreds. This topic seems obligatory in the biopic. The fasinating topic that was covered, that was the most fascinating, was how the Widow Clicquot turned champagne into a geo political issue by going around Napoleon’s embargo.
This is a smaller film unfortunately may get lost in am ocean of bug summer blockbusters and sequels. If given the opportunity purchase a ticket and see this movie on the biggest screen possible. This encourages theaters to not only program the Twisters, Despicable Me 4, and other big blockbuster films but also the small films that spice up the movie going experience. Hey they are also good movies.
Cheers until I next time I will you at the movies
