It is the middle of July and the sequels continue to keep churning out. This weekend’s sequel is Twisters, blowing into theaters twenty eight years after the original. That seems like an incredible length of time to finally make a sequel to a hugely successful film but Top Gun: Maverick was released thirty doc years after its predecessor.
I was skeptical about seeing Twisters. Helen Hunt was not among the cast and obviously Bill Paxton was unable to return for the sequel. In fact the only thing the sequel really has in common is the plot of storm chasers, chasing an outbreak of tornados in the Midwest.
Surprisingly the sequel was a lot of fun. The movie was full of hokey science mixed in with the obligatory young love story. It is full of cool looking CGI visual effects backed up by really loud sound effects. It is not the kind of movie you sit down expecting to have an emotional reaction beyond a good time. Basically it is a text book summer blockbuster.
Glen Powell is well on his way to being the next mega star. After starring as John Glen in Hidden Figures and now with the one-rwo punch of Top Gun: Maverick and Twisters. In between was the rom con Anyone but You inspired by the Shakespeare play Much Ado About Nothing. You know what? He is talented. I look forward to seeing him do some serious leading man work and continue his path to stardom.
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
