BORDERLANDS (2024)

STORYLINE: Lilith (Blanchett), an infamous bounty hunter with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home, Pandora, the most chaotic planet in the galaxy. Her mission is to find the missing daughter of Atlas (Ramírez), the universe’s most powerful S.O.B. Lilith forms an unexpected alliance with a ragtag team of misfits – Roland (Hart), a seasoned mercenary on a mission; Tiny Tina (Greenblatt), a feral preteen demolitionist; Krieg (Munteanu), Tina’s musclebound protector; Tannis (Curtis), the oddball scientist who’s seen it all; and Claptrap (Black), a wiseass robot. Together, these unlikely heroes must battle an alien species and dangerous bandits to uncover one of Pandora’s most explosive secrets. The fate of the universe could be in their hands – but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other. (IMDb)

It’s mid August.  For the film calendar rhat means the summer blockbuster season is winding down and will soon be gobing way to my persona favorite tone of year, the Oscar bait releases of fall.  This past weekend brought the release of one of the final 2024 summer blockbuster releases Borderlands.

The science fiction ensemble was exactly what I expected it to be, a fun ride from start to finish.  That’s what a summer blockbuster us suppose to be. It’s is a visual ice cream cone,Something fun to look at for a few hours. In addition to plenty of fun stunts and bidual effects Borderlands had an outrageous plot that made it fun to watch.

Twenty five years ago, a thirteen year old version of myself would of absolutely loved this movie. As I have aged over the years my so have my taste in movies and thus the watered down reception to Borderlands.

Part of the ensemble was the dream of Academy Award winning actresses Cate Blanchett and Jamie Lee Curtis. Watching the two of them in their over the top, ridiculous performances was part of the fun of the movie.    The thirteen year old version of myself would of never of bothered with that.  Instead I would have been enthralled with the silliness of Jack Black’s vocal work as the movies’ sidekick robot. That’s ok though. Again times change and we change with themdo our preferences in films.

With the sun setting on the 2024 summer season I look forward to focusing more of my attention on yhe awards buzz and Oscar season.

Until next time I will see you at the movies!
