SING SING(2024)

STORYLINE: Divine G (Colman Domingo), imprisoned at Sing Sing for a crime he didn’t commit, finds purpose by acting in a theatre group alongside other incarcerated men, including wary newcomer (Clarence Maclin), in this stirring true story of resilience, humanity, and the transformative power of art, starring an unforgettable ensemble cast of formerly incarcerated actors.      Films like Sing Sing balance a delicate, emotional line in the story they tell. Go to far and the filns becomes overly sentimental. If they don’t go far enough they do not connect with the audience. Sing Sing hit its mark perfectly when yelling the true story of a theater program within the New York prison.

Colman Domingo shines in the lead role as John “Divine G” Whitfield, an inmate at Sing Sing, who was one of the founders of the theater program. This standout performance led the film to be a moving piece of cinema.

The film does not turn a blind eye to prison the unpleasantness of prison. Sing Sing delves unto the how prison demoralizes its occupants. The film shows the violence of prison without showing the violence. Instead ot shows the characters reacting to events off camera. Simg Sing also interweaves the prejudices that prisoners face that they face as they work towards reforming themselves. All these points combined make for an incredible film

I look forward to seeing this film compete for the Academy Awards this winter in many categories.  Chief among those categories best picture and lead actor.

Until next time I will see you at the movies!
