BLINK TWICE (2024)

STORYLINE: When tech billionaire Slater King (Channing Tatum) meets cocktail waitress Frida (Naomi Ackie) at his fundraising gala, sparks fly. He invites her to join him and his friends on a dream vacation on his private island. It’s paradise. Wild nights blend into sun-soaked days and everyone’s having a great time. Nobody wants this trip to end, but as strange things start to happen, Frida begins to question her reality. Something is wrong with this place. She’ll have to uncover the truth if she wants to make it out of this party alive. (IMDb)

Party movies have taken worn all sorts of different hats.  Wedding Crasgers and Bridesmaids made it about the wedding.  This is the End took the party to the post apocalypse.  Hot Tub Time Machine and its sequel (yes there is a sequel) took the party across time, much like the far superior Bill and Ted’s Ecvellebt Adventure. In this week’s release Blink Twice the party jets off to a remote island and merges in a sense of suspense.

The suspense semi works.  As Blink Twice progresses it replicates a hokey science based Stepford Wives with the story.

As a fan of the 1975 Katherine Ross classic I was pleased with this imitation for a little bit. However the imitation grew flat.  By the end I felt the filmmakers were unsure how to end it so the took the quickest way out.

There were moments were the thrills worked. A lot circled around the menacing performance of Channing Tatum’s villain Slater King.

The film worked. It needed some fine tuning but it worked.

Until next time I will see you at the movies!
