Remakes are a coin. They have two sides. One side has the potential to be a really good movie. The 1959 best picture winner Ben Hur, John Carpenter’s 1982 sci-fo masterpiece The Thing, and 2004’s Dawn of the Dead jump to the front of the line of excellent remakes. The flip side of the coin are those that miss there mark. Gus Van Saint’s shot for shot Psycho remake, the 1998 Godzilla remake, asweel as Oldboy starring Josh Brolin are ushered to the front of that line. The latest in the line of bad remakes is 2024’s The Crow.
This version of The Crow took to long to get the story going. By the time the supernatural revenge, tale that was at the heart of the original came into focus, I had lost interest in the film. Also the film was half way over and I did not care for the two central characters.
The gothic feelong that was made the 1994 cult classic standout was removed from this remake. I get wanting to make your version stand on its own. That gothic feeling or a substitute for it is what this film is missing.
Earlier this year I went to a 30th anniversary screening of The Crow. I was reminded of why I enjoyed the film. Seeing the remake fell way short.
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
