STORYLINE: In AFRAID, Curtis (John Cho) and his family are selected to test a revolutionary new home device: a digital family assistant called AIA. Taking smart home to the next level, once the unit and all its sensors and cameras are installed in their home, AIA seems able to do it all. She learns the family’s behaviors and begins to anticipate their needs. And she can make sure nothing – and no one – gets in her family’s way. (IMDb)

All the films listed do have a common thread. They are horror films featuring technology woven into their core story. As civilization has progressed it seems natural to want to show off the tech of the era. Four years post pandemic I am wondering where the horror film around zoom is, after all Unfriended is told over Skype. That is a side note though.
Afraid is the latest on the line of tech based horror, show casing an artificial intelligence at the center of the story taking over the lives of those who turn it on. Yes the film is another cautionary tale. Afraid goes a little overboard with its message but nor far enough to be insulting to my intelligence. I always appreciate that.
Afraid is another run of the mill horror movie. Not every horror flick can be The Exorcist or The Shinibg and that is ok. Run if the mill horror films are still fun.
With it being September I look forward to more spooky films leading up to Halloween.
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
