It’s the Season for All Things Spooky

It’s the tine of year where ghosts, goblins, and all things spooky cone to play.  If this is your time to celebrate may all your nightmares be filled filled with all things scary!

What makes a good horror film vs a bad horror film?  The answer to this is going to be subjective from person to person.

A list of my favorites include classics like Alfred Hitchcock’s immortal Rear Window (1954), Rosemary’S Baby (1968), The Exorcist (1973), as well as The Shining (1980).  More contemporary horror films that I have throughly enjoyed include The Conjuring (2013) and The Innkeepers (2011).  On the other side of the coin, some of the horror films I have not enjoyed are a fair number of the Saw sequels, the entirety of the Hostel franchise, and from 2015 The Gallows.

What do these films have in common?  As t regular readers know I believe that any good film has its geniuses in its story. The stronger the story the more I am drawn to it.  The weaker the story the more I am repelled by it. Thus is the case with the films listed here.

Side note, the following films are not listed. I am a fan of the Twilight series.  They are the exception to my fondness of quality story telling and guilty pleasure of mine. I am 100 percent standing behind my fandom.  Before you ask team Edward.

The difference in the films on the two lists is how gore is incorporated into each film.  With the films I like the gore is there to support the story while with the other list the story is there to support the gore. Circling back this supports my point on a strong story aids ib making an intriguing movie.

So with all that said I am going to close my eyes and once again dream of the macabre.

Until next time, sweet dreams, and  I will see you at the movies!
