LEE (2024)

STORYLINE: The story of American photographer Lee Iller a fashion model who became an acclaimed war correspondent for Vogue magazine during World War II. (IMDb)

What do Defiance (2013), The Pianist (2002), and Hacjsaw Ridge (2016) have in common with one another? They are all true stories set in World War II that The events I knew nothing about. The same is true about this blog entry of Lee, a biopic of photography Lee Miller starring Kate Winslet.

The film focused bery little on her time as a model and picks up almost immediately with her career as a photographer as WW2 breaks out. This leads to Lee Miller’s drive to photograph the war from the frontlines. This is where my fascination with her story kicked in.  Much like Oppenheimer, it was a war about someone who participated on the war but was not actually fighting it. Unlike Oppenheimer, Lee was set in the front lines of the war and showed combat first hand.

Kate Winslet shined as the central subject, Lee Miller. Kate Winslet is an incredible actress so this is to be expected.

What aids in her performance is the makeup. Yhe structure if the film is an interview looking back at the primary events told in the story. The duel timelines required to very different and unique makeup jobs.  Both were distinct and visually disguised the character in both timelines.

In a time when we need strong women role models a biopic that tells the story of Lee Miller is a great example to follow.

Until next time I will see you at the movies!
