HERETIC (2024)

STORYLINE: Two young religious women are drawn into a game of cat-and-mouse in the house of a strange man. (IMDb)

I typically do not enjoy films that star Hugh Grant. I did not enjoy Mickey Blue Eyes.  I could not stand Notting Hill.  I am going to play dumb to the fact that he was in Bridget Jones Duary because of how much I like Renee Zwelleger. The two sequels on the other hand prove my point. Love Actually is the exception.  The film showcases a large enough ensembkdvwhere he pretty much gets frowned out by talent I enjoy. However I recently saw a horror film, in which, he headlined that I throughly enjoyed.  Heretic is the film that now proves to be the exception.

The film follows two young missionary women, while sharing their beliefs, visit Hugh Grant’s villainous Mr Reed.  From this point the scares begin. I didn’t find the film scary but intense.  Which works just as well for me.

Hugh Grant tossed away his pretty boy love interest type and traded it for a villain obsessed on going to extremes to prove Gus points. As much as I am not as fan of the actors work this 180 was a welcome change.

What was a welcome as well was how the film dealt with faith. Every other film on the market is presented as feel good, preachy crap and I cleaned that up from a previous draft. I found Heretic to be actually thought provoking with how it presented its points on faith.  Yes this is done through the lens of a horror film.

With all that said I a, surprised at how much I enjoyed a Hugh Grant movie.

Until next time I will see you at the movies!
