STORYLINE: A vivid reimagining of the classic The Wizard of Oz, Wicked spotlights the untold stories of Oz’s most famous (or infamous) characters, namely the Wicked Witch of the West and her unlikely friend, Glinda the Good Witch. The show follows green-skinned star Elphaba from birth to college and through the life-changing events which eventually label her “wicked,” introducing spoiled rich girl Glinda, local prince and heartthrob Fiyero and even the Wizard of Oz himself, a troubled man very unlike the one you may remember. As Elphaba, a passionate political activist if there ever was one, fights injustice and seeks to undo the mistakes of the past, dark secrets, and personal tragedies shape the history of Oz, paying homage to the classic Wizard of Oz story while simultaneously changing fans’ understanding of it forever. To answer the question that is on everyone’s mind: I was not dressed up for my showing of Wicked but I was appropriately bedazzled with ribbons in my hair. For those who saw the movie with me will attest, I am sure, I looked wickedly stunning.
It was a long time before I enjoyed dejections from the musical genre. The film that broke the through for me was 1975’s The Rocky Horror Picture Show. For me, it home an outsiders want for acceptance. The film showcased a grand scale of showmanship with its musical numbers.
I get drawn into movie musicals not because they are musicals but because they can lend themselves to be over the top spectacles. When there is a bug fried that is into the movie, I am about as happy as I can get at the cinema.
Imagine my joy as the audience began to fill in the seats to sell out the matinee showibg of Wicked. They were applauding those lavish, over the top production numbers that are very clearly fan favorite songs from the play.
I enjoyed experiencing the sights and sounds of the production on the big screen. When Musi Al’s are done right, as is the case here, they are meant to be heard in the surround sound of a movie theater auditorium. The production design and costume design on the film are a nice visual feast to go along with my before mention bedazzledness, as well as, the sounds of the music.
All in all this is a movie that, like The Rocky Horror Picture Show is meant to be shared, in a theater, with a crowd.
Until next time I will see you at rge movies, and I may bedazzle myself again!
