MARIA (2024)

STORYLINE: Maria Callas, the world’s greatest opera singer, lives the last days of her life in 1970s Paris, as she confronts her identity and life. (IMDb)

In 2005’s Walk the Line there was plenty of country music. Why?  The movie’s subject matter is Johnny Cash. The Elton John biopic, 2019’s Rocketman, features all his greatest hits. So why does the 2024 Maria Callas biopic, Maria, not focus on what an incredible opera singer she was?  Instead the film chooses to focus on the last days of the celebrities life, as she reflects back on what was a life lived. I was disappointed in this.

While watching the film I found it to be disjointed. A lot of the movie was almost like a documentary with its interview style structure. Then the style would randomly switch to a drama with lavish scenes of parties and intimate personal sequences featuring the diva and her inner circle. The transition randomly jumped from one to the other and back again.

I was looking forward to watching Angelina Jolie star as Maria Callis.  (Irrelevant sidebar  after seeing the Gone in 60 Seconds rename Angelina Jolie became my first Hollywood.)  she did not shine the way I was hoping she would in the role. She seemed to just walk around and complain  a lot, thus is the nature of the film. The performance reflects the material she was given.

Oh well I can’t when them all. Jopegulky Moana 2 will be better when I see it this afternoon.

Until next time I will see you at the movies!
