STORYLINE: When visionary architect László Toth and his wife Erzsébet flee Europe to rebuild their legacy and witness the birth of modern America, their lives are changed forever by a mysterious and wealthy client. The seemingly charming industrialist Harrison Van Buren offers László and his family the American Dream on a silver platter by commissioning him to design a grand modernist monument and help shape the landscape of the country he now calls home. It will be the most ambitious project of his career, one that will take László and Erzsébet to both monumental heights and devastating lows (IMDb)
– Oppenheimer (180 minutes) – Killers of the Flowers (206 minutes) – 2921’s Dune (155 minutes) – No Time to Die (163 minutes) – Boyhood (165 minutes)
There is currently a trend in film to make movies long. If there is enough material to tell a good story there is nothing wrong with that. Tell a whole story though. Don’t do like Dune did and split the movie in half and make two long movies. The Brutalist is the latest film to push the limits of an excess runtime. The film clocks in at 215 minutes and comes with an intermission. Yes it tells a complete story.
Adrien Brody stars in this time commitment. Once again he gives an awards worthy performance. I would like to see Ralph Finnes take the gold for his performance in Conclave personally but would be ok if Adrien Brody was victorious.
The Brutalist was a fine film. It was not the greatest film I have ever seen. I found myself ready for it to end. The one man’s obsession story I have seen has held my attention better in other movies such as Oppenheimer.
I can see why this movie is getting awards attention. I would prefer something like Sing Song winning the top awards because I thought it was the more compelling movie.
Until next time o will see you at the movies!
