THE ROOM NEXT DOOR (2024)

STORYLINE: Ingrid (Julianne Moore) and Martha (Tilda Swinton) were close friends in their youth, when they worked together at the same magazine. Ingrid went on to become an autofiction novelist while Martha became a war reporter, and they were separated by the circumstances of life. After years of being out of touch, they meet again in an extreme but strangely sweet situation. (IMDb)

The Room Next Door put itself in a crossroads that really interested me. It was a powerful subject (euthanasia) and the pairing of two incredible actresses (Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore).  This should have been the set up for an interesting film but The Room Next Door missed is mark.

This is the kind of film that annoys me more then any other.   It has an over dramatic score that plays during overly designed heart warming moments to tug at my heart strings.   I hate being emotionally manipulated in this way.  It’s EXTREMELY insulting.

Setting aside the overly dramatic heart warming moments either lover the score or ideally cut out all together.  Both Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton are talented individuals. They do not need the help of music to make a moment a powerful moment.

If you are looking for a movie that touches on the subject of death see Julie Louie-Dreyfus in Tuesday. It does not deal with the topic of euthanasia but  is a powerful film that talks about many of the same talking points as The Room Nect Door such as grief  before the passing of a loved one.

In the end The Room Next Door is a Dud.

Until next time I will see you at the movies!
