Horror movies come in all shapes and sizes.   Some, such as Saw, are torturous.  Others lurk in the shadows om Halloween.  Some get possessive and make my head spin.  The Monkey, based on a short story by Stephen King, goes for the supernatural.

I like that modern horror is trending back towards jump scares and relying less on shock value.  The Monkey continues this trend and does so with a macabre since of humor.

Yes the film features it’s fair share of blood and guts but like other adaptations of Stephen King works the gore is their to support the story. This is a reversal, and a fresh one, from the sequels in the Saw franchise and the Hostel film series as a whole.

The Monkey reminded me of Annabelle.  Both films were toys that killed in some supernatural fashion or another.

The Monkey was good  Was is great? No.  Was it the best Stephen King film adaptation?  That depends if this is Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining or not.

Until next time I will see you at the movies.
