EEPHUS (2025)

STORYLINE: As an imminent construction project looms over their beloved small-town baseball field, a pair of New England rec-league teams face off for the last time. Tensions flare up and ceremonial laughs are shared as an era of camaraderie and escapism fades into an uncertain future. (IMDb).

I have noticed that baseball films tend to have a since of hope to them.  Films such as Field of Dreams (1989), The Sandlot (1993), and The Natural (1984) just to name a few.  I am not saying there is no conflict, after all that would dull down the film, I am saying the sports bound films tend to have hope as a theme within their stories. After all baseball is the past time of America. Eephus is the latest film about the sport to step up the plate and does not through a curve ball into the genre.

That does not mean the film is not entertaining. After all I passed an enjoyable evening with my standard concession order of a large soft drink and small buttered popcorn watching the film.  Eephus did not revolutionize the genre. It is a cookie cutter picture. If you enjoy that, as I do when I watch baseball films such as this one, I raise my soda cup to you.

The film is basically the kids from The Sandlot all grown up and can’t move on.  Is Eephus better then The Sandlot? No, that should not of even been asked. The Sandlot is an excellent film, a staple of my childhood, and Eephus is a mediocre film that was entertaining.

Ok I have compared and ranted about the two movies, time to move on. I liked that there was no Field of Dreams moment, no big inspirational speech to bring the audience to tears moment. I would of been insulted if there was. The film was a bunch of characters just playing baseball together.

This one checked the boxes to be entertaining, not great. That’s ok.

Until next time I will see you at the movies!
