OPUS (2025)

STORYLINE: A writer travels to the compound of a pop icon who disappeared years ago. Surrounded by his cult of sycophants, as well as a group of fellow journalists, she soon discovers his twisted plans for the gathering. (IMDb)

Films about cults have a natural tendency to be made within the walls of the horror genre. The concept of their material fits naturally there. Rarely are they colored outside of these lines. The science fiction musical The Rocky Horror Picture Show(1975) is a perfect example of  film about a cult that is a non horror feature. 2025’s Opus I would categorize as a suspense film.  While not a horror film, suspenses films such as this are creepy enough to be horror adjacent. Still it counts.

The film relies heavily on the performances of its two leads, Ayo Edebiri (the voice of Envy in Inside Out 2) and John Malkovich.  The characters were polar opposites and were played that way, especially how creepy John Malkovich played his role. Both leads came together to make this film work.

104 minutes was just right for this movie. Nothing dragged. Opus got to its story in a timely fashion.  The story was not rushed.  I felt satisfied with how everything unfolded.  I can not say the same about 2019’s Midsommar, a film I really wanted to like and was disappointed when it fell flat for me.

I really wanted to like Opus.  I really liked Opus.  I am glad I really liked Opus.

Until next time I will see you at the movies!
