SINNERS (2025)

STORYLINE: From Ryan Coogler-director of “Black Panther” and “Creed”-and starring Michael B. Jordan comes a new vision of fear: “Sinners.” Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers (Jordan) return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back. (IMDb)

Vampire films come in all shapes and sizes.  Some sparkle (The Twilight Saga and I stand behind saga) while others are fun for the whole family (The Hotel Transylvania series), and yes they are even scary (insert your favorite example here).  Sinners, from Director Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station, Black Panther, Creed) is a slow burn, horror feature, that crosses genres with the gangster genre.

The first act is slow, at times painfully slow.  Once the second act gets going the film switches from being slow to being an atmospheric hirror film with a slow burn to it.  Though never action packed until the climax of the film, Sinners, never became slow again.

The vampire story, ine of Sinners reminded of an elevated version of From Dusk Till Dawn.  That’s not meant to be a negative towards From Dusk Till Dawn, it’s a lot of fun to watch. Sinners I thought had a bit more with its message.  In the end I enjoyed both films.

I really enjoyed the look of the Sinners.  The contrast of looks between day and night matched the contrast in looks between the genres of gangster and vampire films.

Will this go down in history as one of the finest vampire folms? No but it is still really good!

Until next time I will see you at the movies!
