FAMILIAR TOUCH (2025)

STORYLINE: An octogenarian woman transitions to life in assisted living as she contends with her conflicting relationship to herself and her caregivers amidst her shifting memory, age identity, and desires. (IMDb)

Familiar Touch is the latest film to take up the mantle about aging.  It’s a touchy subject to tackle. Films such as Driving Miss Daisy (1989) did it well.

Familiar Touch narrows its focus on adjusting to living in assisted living and with dementia/Alzheimer’s.  It does this well.  However, Familiar Touch takes a back seat to the Academy Award winning film The Father (2020).  The difference is The Father offers a first person perspective of the frustration of going through dementia/Alzheimer’s. I did not feel that I got that perspective with Familiar Touch.  Still it was an interesting perspective, the confusion of bit fully understanding new circumstances in which you are adapting.

Any film is dependent on the performances.  In this feature the performances are strong.  This film that is needed, say more than a Marvel feature, is needed to do the heavy lifting for it to work. With the acting being top notch the film was able to work the way it did.

Yes I thought this was a good film.  I did not find it as thought provoking as The Father (2020) or Supernova (2020) starring Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci.

Until next time I will see you at the movies!
