STORYLINE: When five friends inadvertently cause a deadly car accident, they cover up their involvement and make a pact to keep it a secret rather than face the consequences. A year later, their past comes back to haunt them and they’re forced to confront a horrifying truth: someone knows what they did last summer…and is hell-bent on revenge. As one by one the friends are stalked by a killer, they discover this has happened before, and they turn to two survivors of the legendary Southport Massacre of 1997 for help. (IMDb)
Many good films mix and match cinema. Ridley Scott’s 1979 Alien blends haunted houses films with the science fiction genre. When Harry Met Sally (1989), Sleepless in Seattle (1993) and others like these mix and match romance with comedy. Following a recent trends, within the hirror genre in particular ot seems, I Know What You Did Last Summer is simultaneously a roboot and a sequel to the 1997 original.
I have always been ho hum towards I Know What You Did Last Summer. I was semi entertained by the films. I thought the most entertaining parts were what the Wayans Brothers put in their horror spoof Scary Movie (2000). The point I am getting it is they were pretty forgettable for ne.
So when I first saw the trailer for this 2025 feature I had two thoughts. Mt first was really, this film, again? My second thought was that was sone awful and obligatory dialogue in the trailer. I groaned at it, and not in a fun, I want this to be a cheesy B movie kind of way. None the less I grabbed my standard concession order and assumed my standard seat in the A/C.
Not rememberin, or having seen, the original film isn’t really a requirement for yhe 2025 film. Everything you need to know comes out in the reboot portion of the film. It’s updated for the social media age. (Part of me wants to rewatch the 1997 film for nostalgia, as I was a child of the 90s). The sequel portion of the film kicks In with characters from the original film mentoring the new generation through the sane events. Scream did this plot device better.
There are better slasher franches in the halls of cinema. Fruday the 13th and Halloween to name two. Both have umpteen sequels to entertain me and I hace copies of them in my movie library.
I can’t complain about enjoying a cold soft drink in air conditioning during the heat of the day though and I won’t. That was truly the best part of the movie. Now you know what I did last summer. (Ok I am not as clever as I think I am but I am pleased with that one).
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
