STORYLINE: In May of 2020, a standoff between a small-town sheriff and mayor sparks a powder keg as neighbor is pitted against neighbor in Eddington, New Mexico. (IMDb)
Five years after the Covid 19 pandemic we see its influence on popular culture. The pandemic is being being used a modern historical reference point, much like 9/11 and the 2008 economic crisis. Eddington is a a fictionalized drama set in the very real world of the Covid crisis.
It was scary to remember the events of summer 2020, as I watched Eddington. The film not only portrays shut down and the fears of not knowing about the virus but the division over wearing masks, racial tensions ib America surrounding the murder of George Floyd, and yes the political device. That’s a lot for one film to cover.
I was uncomfortable after watching the movie, espically the first two acts. I say the first two acts because in the third act Joaquin Phoenix’s character takes a turn towards the paranoid side of things and it changes the tone of the film dramatically. However in recreating the events of the summer of 2020, I personally feel the film is designed to make the viewer feel uncomfortable. It’s ok for me to step outside of my confort zone from time to time with films like these.
In 2021 there was another film about the Covid crisis titled Together. I felt that summed everything up where Eddington tackled the social issues that summer.
Yes I was out of my comfort zone for the two and a half hour run time and like I said before that is a good thing.
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
