STORYLINE: Something bad happened to Agnes. But life goes on – for everyone around her, at least. (IMDb)
During the summer cinenas are stereotypically filled with big blockblocters, franchise sequels, and fun family film fair. The small independent features have a tendency to fall off the radar as Superman flies high or Four become Fantastic. Sprinkled amongst the current independent summer cinematic flair is Sorry, Baby.
The film follows Agnes’ life after a traumatic event. The film shows the viewer the events leading up to the trauma, does not show the actual trauma, but the moments immediately after, and how the trauma affects the life of Angels over the course of the next few years.
Sorry, Baby is a tricky film to make. It can become preachy and lose its point in over selling the messageme which is one of the greatest sins of cinena. On the other hand the film does not want to undersell the importance of the message it is conveying. All of this while being sensitive to the subject matter that the events are portraying. The filmmakers thread this cautious needle in the delicate way that it needs to be. Oddly what helps with that is a since of humor sprinkled throughout the feature.
Time was a central story telling aspect to the film. It allows the filmmakers to show hos trauma can reoccur in little ways at random points in life. All this with a respectful since of humor to help keep the viewer engaged with the film.
Sorry, Baby is powerful counter programming to the big fireworks of summer cinema.
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
