STORYLINE: The Bad Guys are struggling to find trust and acceptance in their newly minted lives as Good Guys, when they are pulled out of retirement and forced to do “one last job” by an all-female squad of criminals. (IMDb)
Sequels seem like an inevitability when a film is a success, especially when the film is a successful family film. This equation is cinena math 101. How many sequels did Hotel Transylvania end up having? Three sequels. I’m not complaining because the franchise continually entertained me. This summer the animated hit from 2022, The Bad Guys, received its first sequel.
To set the expectation, the first film, was entertaining. I didn’t expect anything more out of the film and I remember leaving the theater satisfied. Now that it’s three years later, it’s fair to say my expectations were the same for The Bad Guys 2. Expectations met. I’m satisfied with that.
Ever since I saw Galaxy Quest (1999) I have enjoyed Sam Rockwell as an actor. Along the way I have enjoyed films that he has starred in such as The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (2005), The Way Way Back (2013), Jo Jo Rabbit (2019), and my personal favorite of his Three Billboards outside Ebbing MO (2018). I loved his voice work, as the lead, in The Bad Guys 2. The same with Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians, The Farewell, Migration) who brought her standard bot of over the top comedy, that I have come to throughly enjoy to her role,
It’s no coincidence that this family friendly sequel is being released now, in early August. School will be starting soon, it’s one last grasp for summer blockbuster dollars for studios. I get it. This seems like a standard most summers. I’m glad it was a release that I found entertaining.
Until next time I will see you at the movies, and their sequels!
