Films about family gatherings are films I go into with the most hesitation. It could be big family events, like the holidays (side bar I always dread that time of year but that’s irrelevant), are not my thing. The other part of it is there is no middle ground in the genre. For every one I enjoy, like Big Fish (2003) or Three Identical Strangers (2019), there is an Ordinary People (1980) and What Dreams May Come (1998) that I dis enjoy. So with that that in mind, I saw My Mother’s Wedding, starting Scarlett Johansson.
There were positive messages in the film, but the film tried to hard to convey these messages of family, priorities, and standing up for yourself. I can not stand it when a film does this. I have referred to this as being preachy. I find it insulting. I am smart enough to recognize a films message without it being repeated over and over again.
The other thing that My Mother’s Wedding did was be over emotional and was pulling at the heart strings. It was telling me how I should be feeling at given point throughout the film. This is one of the greatest sins of cinena. I know myself pretty well. Don’t turn up a musical score to regulate my emotions, for me. Don’t do this, espically when your cast includes Kristen Scott Thomas (The English Patient, The Horse Whisperer) and Frida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire). These are talented women who can convey emotion without cheap musical aid gimmicks.
I could have done without seeing this one but I wanted to.
Until next time I will see you at the movies!
